Should I buy high end or drug store makeup? What brushes should I be using with powder products? Why can’t I find the one perfect mascara? We can all use a few more tips and secrets about makeup, am I right? The burning question still remains, what product will make me flawless?
Just because makeup has a high price tag doesn’t mean it will give you a flawless look. Lets face it, Kim K could wear drug store makeup and if Mario applies it, it will look perfect! Why is that? Because she is applying it correctly, with the correct tools and has a beautiful canvas to start with!
I’m going to take you through a few of my beauty secrets when it comes to getting the most out of your makeup!
YOUR MAKEUP APPLICATION IS ONLY AS GOOD AS YOUR SKIN CARE ROUTINE
What do I mean by this? If you have rough, dry, bumpy, uneven textured skin, your makeup will be just that! Rough and bumpy! You MUST exfoliate & hydrate your skin to have a smooth canvas to apply your makeup on! Imagine painting on glass VS painting on sandpaper. The glass will always have a smooth finish!
After you hydrate & moisturize, your first makeup step will be to prime! Primer is crucial to achieve that perfect look! Why? Primer fills your pores and helps smooth uneven texture. It’s like the glue to your foundation, keeping it in place and lasting throughout the day.
Becca Backlight Filter My personal favorite
There are many ways to apply foundation, but the secret tool is a SPONGE! Us makeup artists like to use a sponge because it presses the foundation into your skin and gives an airbrushed, brush stroke free, flawless finish! My favorite sponges are:
BAKE YOUR FACE
When it comes to setting your foundation (or any cream based products for that matter), you need to set them! Where most people go wrong is just throwing on a little loose powder all over and conceder it done! “Baking your face” is when you take a damp beauty sponge and dip it into your loose powder, press it into your face (usually around your nose, under eyes, and below your contour), and let it BAKE, literally. You’re natural 98.6 degree body temperature actually warms your concealer and foundation and bakes these layers together. Once you are done with your powder products (like eye shadow, bronzer, etc), take a fluffy brush and gently sweep the loose powder away! I typically let my powder bake for 10 min!
LIPS THAT POP
Just like your face, your lips need to be prepped too! You want luscious lips, not dry, chapped, rough lips! Make sure you are using a LipSmooth and wax FREE lip balm to prep before you pucker!
MAKE THEM GET LOST IN YOUR EYES
You’re eyes are going to seal the deal. They are what draws people in. Make them stand out! That doesn’t mean you need to have a thick wing, smokey eye or bold look, this could also be a natural soft glam look! They just need to be done right! Also, don’t forget to add that finishing touch with a set of gorgeous lashes!
You do NOT need to splurge on brushes! Morphe brushes and some drug store brands, like Real Technique brushes, work great! What you do need to know is if they are natural or synthetic! There is a big difference and you don’t want to be using the wrong brush with the right product! For instance, natural hair brushes have a cuticle layer and hold product (great for powder products) vs synthetic brushes that are best of cream products! Learn more HERE!
CREAM VS POWDER PRODUCTS
Cream or powder? Here is the quick answer, CREAM ALWAYS! Cream based cosmetics like eye shadow, blush and contour not only last all day long, but there is no fall out! If I do end up using powder eye shadow, which I do use (again, Morphe wins), I make sure I use a cream based shadow to prime.
Cream eye shadow -Candlelight is the color I prime with EVERY SINGLE TIME.
My best kept secret for mascara is always use two! I find I get the best outcome when I use a non waterproof mascara like Benefit Bang with a waterproof mascara over it! Also, make sure you are doing the “wiggle” as I to call it! Wiggle the wand side to side at the base of your lashes, then draw it out to the ends! This helps to thicken and lengthen your lashes!
SAY NO TO BAD BROWS
Brows frame your face. Don’t skip this step! No matter how natural or bold you wear your brows, they need to be groomed, touched up, and set! My favorite way to have my brows groomed is to have them sugared! It is painless, quick and inexpensive! To touch them out or fill them in a bit, I prefer to use ABH Brow Wiz, and to set them I use a drug store Elf brow stay.
